Remember America’s Basic Values in the Constitution
In this frenzied political season, here’s an opportunity to remember what elections are all about, and what binds us all together: the United States Constitution … now stated in a way everyone will be able to understand.
Teaching the Constitution in September
“Constitution Translated for Kids” (Ovation Books, August 2008), helps all Americans understand the only American birthright, the foundation for the government of “We the People,” the Constitution of the United States.
“Constitution Translated for Kids,” originally published in 2006, was hailed by teachers as an extraordinary resource for teaching the Constitution (now required by law in mid-September), and is now available in paperback to make the book easier for schools to purchase in bulk. The book is also available in Spanish.
Teachers have raved that the book and FREE teachers guide have transformed classroom discussions. “Constitution Translated for Kids” pairs the original document with an easy-to-read version that clearly restates the ideas that form the foundation of American democracy.
This book provides the first ever side-by-side look at this complex document explained in easily understood terms. Travis also includes a timeline, modern applications of the document and an explanation of the actual and proposed amendments providing a fuller understanding of this invaluable piece of history.
A McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum survey found that 22% of Americans knew the names of the TV cartoon’s “Simpsons” family members … while just 0.1% knew the five fundamental rights guaranteed under the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Another survey by the Columbia School of Law revealed that nearly two thirds of Americans believe a Karl Marx axiom (“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”) was in the Constitution. It is not.
Raised in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Travis currently resides on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. She earned a bachelor’s degree Arkansas State University and has worked on numerous political campaigns.
